A 2:1 transformer wired backwards (mains to secondary, primary to circuit) will give you about 220-240vac... A piece of equipment that requires 60v would have a 2:1. I have no idea what uses that off hand... *starts opening stuff* |

Pyro451 Member 'ToO hARdcoRe foR AA' Level 29 Posts: 1,885 Submissions: 50 ![]() | Alright, that would probably work. These caps are 200 v, but 220-240 is still below the surge limit. Just give me some instructions on how to wire up the transformer (I'm pretty good with most electronic components, but, when it comes to how transformers work, the amish know more), and I'll do it. |

In my personal experience, older equipment is more likely to be a good donor. They had big chunky multitap transformers in them. Plug it in and measure the voltage between the secondary leads (the ones that go to the circuit board). You're looking for something in the 60-75 volt area... Some old tube amps/console stereos had step-up transformers... Then all you have to do is rip it out, and connect the wires that went to the circuit board to the outlet and the wires that were connected to the plug to your cap bank (with a high wattage resistor)... OOOOooorrr..... You might be able to use multiple disposable camera flashes to charge it. But it'd take a while to complete the charge, and you'd need a transformer to power the cameras... Or a ton of AA batts... X-D OOOOooooorrr..... The easiest route would be to get one of these. :-D BTW, where'd you get the caps? |

They came in a duct-taped wine cheese box. 2. the first thing seems like alot of work, the camera flash thingy is around 4000 volts, 20 times the limit. 3. That 220 volt transformer looks awesome, thanks. Also, does it matter when it comes to capacitors what the amperage is? |

Dodge Site Admin 'Open foot, insert mouth' Level 19 Posts: 1,989 Submissions: 53 | As long as you use a resistor in line, it doesn't matter. The resistor you use will cut the current down to the transformer's rated output. I don't remember the formulas, but I can figure out what value and wattage resistor you'd need. The camera flashes actually only put out 220VDC at the capacitor. The 4000 you mentioned is for the flash trigger at the bulb... Extremely low current, and not usable for anything that induces any draw. The problem with the camera flashes is the time it would take to charge your cap bank... You'd have to change the battery multiple times before you got anywhere near the charge you wanted. |

Dodge Site Admin 'Open foot, insert mouth' Level 19 Posts: 1,989 Submissions: 53 | Sorry for all the nosey questions... How big are they? Can't really see them in the video. Got a pic? I have about 40-50 220v 470μf flash caps lying about. Perhaps I should make a coil gun, or maybe a can crusher. I just wish I had more time... |
