You're actually changing the capacitance of the antenna. Capacitors are basically just two conductive surfaces really close together, one positive, one negative. Your hand is acting as the negative conductive surface. The reason the piece of metal didn't change it much is because it's not as grounded as your body. This might work... I'm guessing here: Get a piece of wire. Connect it to a grounded piece of metal (like a metal radiator pipe or the center screw (holds the cover plate on) on an electrical outlet). Connect the other end to a 12" x 12" piece of aluminum foil laid under the crappy radio. That's called a ground plane. Should improve reception. If you try that, let me know if it works. |
