EXPLORATION ![]() Dresden Island Generating Facility Living close enough to the location where this plant is, I've revisited the area several times. The area is surrounded by several state parks, hunting and archery ranges, and fishing lakes. Obviously, I can't get inside the building as it is a nuclear reactor, so what I will be showing you is a few shots of the outside, and some of the peculiarities around the area. I found this plant several years ago when I was with one of my ex-girlfriends. We drove down a rather long road, and the first thing we came up on was an odd sign: (Note, these pictures were taken over the course of a couple years). ![]() Obviously, this isn't your typical road sign. Below, you'll see a daytime shot of what this looks like: ![]() As we drove down the road, we noticed that there was not only a chain link fence with barbed wire, there was a ditch, and then a steep hill. ![]() Of course, this peaked my curiosity...Elaine had to "remind me" of the legalities of trespassing before I hopped the fence to see what laid beyond it. Driving on further, we see another warning sign, and then a tunnel: ![]() ![]() ![]() We continued driving down the road until we found out exactly what was hidden behind there... ![]() Nuclear Generating Plant...Interesting. The road behind the sign was our next turn... We came up upon the entrance to the plant, which we decided a U-Turn would be the next best choice... ![]() Heading back down the road, we notice that the large hills behind the fence were actually cooling lakes, the fog was caused by the heat of the nuclear reaction. ![]() And a few shots of the cooling towers: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Another part of the reactor: ![]() Having a 12x Zoom helps ![]() Pretty cool shit, but we did a little more looking around...We saw this sign (most of these have been replaced, which sucks)... ![]() Turned down the road, and saw a marking for a now-defunct railroad crossing: (This picture is awesome) ![]() This leads to one large assed transformer: ![]() And the lock and dam (which is obviously an area I shouldn't be). ![]() ![]() There was also a little area to park and walk down by the Des Plaines River: ![]() ![]() And a huge lifting railroad bridge which a few people have climbed, including the user HOHA85 |
