I'm sure many of you are aware of Google Sketchup, for those that aren't, it's a 3D modeling program (yes it's free) which allows you to design anything from engine parts to buildings.

Recently, I've reinstalled it (I used to use it to design all kinds of things), and here's a few creations I've made.

If you don't have it yet, you should download it. For those who do have it, and have made something with it, post what you've made.

An Auto Shop complete with lifts, lathes, offices, oil bays, toolboxes, air compressors, oil handlers, and delivery areas.

Something I just started, sort of a strip mall with a dining patio on the second floor. Probably won't finish this one.

A truck bed design for the Luv, should I decide to build a wooden bed for it. Complete with wiring, lighting, and legal requirements.

Also, I have been talking about building a CarPC for a while now, something to replace the radio so I don't have to deal with commercials, skipping CDs, and so my penis looks bigger.

Originally, I wanted to remove the radio and heater controller from the dash, and replace it with a microcontroller. Today, I decided I'll instead build a new center console that houses a screen, a PC, an amp, an inverter, a few USB ports, a line-in, and a DVD-ROM.

Here's my initial design for it:

Man that's badass. I had no idea google had that out.
Kudos for the detailed models you made using it. I like your idea for the car pc as well.

I used google sketchup a lot (I actually made a movie with it about spaghettification) and found it a generally helpful tool except for an annoying tendency to "stick" surfaces together.

Fuck off, .

Yes, that is very annoying. It does have quirks, like anything.

I find that if you're zoomed way down onto what you're extruding, then it won't stick to other surfaces. Seems like a more precise move if you do it this way.

I have sketchup here, pirated the pro version. I'm not too good at it, but it is fairly useful.

I think I've heard you can export it as CAD, and do a little more with the filetypes. I wouldn't mind making a few CAD drawings with that, as CAD is a pain in the ass.

It looks pretty cool, but I think you need some tile around the pool, or at least some concrete.

I'm finally downloading it. I'll probably post some mock ups once I get better at using it.

Good call. I do have a small circle of sand at the shallow end, but it does make sense to put something all the way around it.

I'd like to see what you guys are making. Even if you're just starting out, post it anyway. I've used it for years, so don't think that it trumps what you're doing -- I didn't make that shit for a while either.

I'll probably try this tomorrow when I'm not doing anything, but I will be leaving within a few minutes, so I can't right now.

^Damn you...

I'm downloading that now.

Show me a few things you made with that, it would be interesting to see.

Anybody interesting in a SketchUp tutorial?

I'll have to do that sometimes. If it's too steep a learning curve, I might not use it. I hate learning new software.
