As it has been mentioned in the forums, many of the submissions seem to lack comments and ratings. I will get to this in a little bit. First I'd like to thank everybody for rating submissions on the site. DeadLazyBum and Coopz, by far, have done a ton of rating according to my database. Nice job.

Now, why were comments and ratings removed?

While porting the submissions from the old database to the new one, I noticed that several of them had comments from non-existent users. This caused several bad results to come up (404 errors) which looks bad on search engine results. In addition, the comments were still on the old database system up until right after I got the submissions on the new database. It ended up being much easier to lose a few good comments for the hordes of poor ones.

The ratings were also cleared? Why?

In the past, ratings were rather poor in nature. Despite having a high level, your rating was equal to that of the same member level. You could also trick the site into letting you vote something multiple times with different accounts. I have added better self voting protection, and also nullified all previous votes (without removing points) to enable use of the new, member-level weighted votes.

In addition, I made the ratings revisable. Say if you rate something a 5, but see later on that the quality was lacking. You can go back and rate it a zero. Of course no points will be exchanged after the first rating.

This is also good for higher member levels. If you rated something a 5 when you were a level 5, you can go back as a level 20, and your higher influence will now come into play on the submission.

It is the highly customized rating system that differs YN from the norm of voting-enabled sites.

As a reminder: 0* ratings do NOT generate anybody points, including yourself. So when rating 0*, make sure the person actually deserves the rating. The Help with Rating System page explains this more, except the revisable part (which will be added in the near future).

I have an idea.

How about we must post say... one submission a day, and rate five to get your Daily Interest?

Or make it so that you MUST comment if you rate it.

The first one I'll have to think about.

The second one will discourage ratings. If people HAVE to add a comment to a submission, then the value of the comments will go down due to "+1, FIRST, etc". I can't stand the "First Comment" thing. Although I can see who is rating what, I think the anonymous part of it helps a little, encourages "honest rating" (this might sound odd, but I won't let somebody who I like see me rating something they posted a zero because it sucked, etc).

Poor ratings given by members without a reason is noted. I don't want to see people's submissions rated low because they don't like a person (hence the zero-points for zero-rating policy). I also do monitor the average rating a member gives out, and can nullify a set of ratings if I feel they were done maliciously. There was a member in the past who was going submission to submission rating zero, and I removed all of his ratings from the site. I feel it's this sort of a protective layer that promotes honest rating, and generally prevents animosity on the site.

As an additional side note, I'm am also thinking about reducing the current interest rate of all members (based on the current standards) and adding value to ratings and computing that into interest. I think that this will help encourage members to vote on submissions to attain a good interest rate.

That does indeed sound like a good idea. It would encourage more people to rate stuff. The droping the interest doesn't appeal to me too much as my interest allready sucks, lol, but I'm not really too fussed, it will be easy to get it up again by rating stuff (if you do implement that idea). I know from what the longer serving members have said that the interest is high once you've worked up a bit so I'm sure it could afford to be lowered a bit.

PS. Thanks for the mention, glad to be of help, and I plan on doing a helluva a lot more too! I plan on systematically working through everything on the site, rating, commenting, and adding tags wherever I see the opportunity.

I'm just shooting blindly here, but if I do make the adjustment, I don't see your interest being affected much due to your high rating count.

oh, so it would take into account the ratings we've allready made and adjust accordingly? Sounds good to me then!

Right now, mine is only on 1 point a day.
I assume it will go up in the same fashion as it does on RE?
And the fact that i just leveled up means that my interest will have dropped?

Interest raises much more on here than on RE. Leveling up makes your interest go higher, I believe. Rating, as of right now, does nothing to it, but it should soon. I don't remember if posting does, so I'll check that out with this post. Found it, posting adds .0001 percent to your interest.

Currently, your interest is calculated by:

Interest = ((Posts * 0.005) + (Subs * 0.01) + (Level * 0.05) / 100

That is your rate percentage.

Ad-Free = Interest * 2
250+ Points = Interest * 2

This is the first time I've posted the interest calculation information. But mind you, I will probably be reducing this and putting a weight in for ratings. The ratings you have already done will apply to this, so keep up the good work.

I think if you do that though people will start rating everything without viewing it like they do on RE. People may just go about rating everything 0* just to get their interest rate up.
