I've been working, and doing all the things life calls on... But I haven't forgot about this site. This site used to be a much more frequented forum, which over it's 4 years of online service has had over 200 members, and over 54,000 posts. We have provided a meal to over 380 people for a day with our annual Free Rice competition (which will be starting this December). Are there bigger companies out there than YouN00b? Yea. YouN00b isn't a company. It started as a site to give members a stable, productive, and modern website free of tyrannical moderators and privacy exploiting bugs. Did this site grow how I thought it would? Nah, but that's fine. I wanted to create a community where the members dictated most site decisions (where the law and privacy allows). I wanted to let everybody contribute their own sections, start new niches, share user-generated content, and so on. I've talked about a YN3 several times, I've even started on bits and pieces of it. I've had several ideas for changes, one of which was dropping Images and Videos for both legal, and visitor retention reasons (why have images when they can go in the forum? Why have videos when there's YouTube?). I've never finished them, I get motivated and then post threads for ideas and they're too short lived for me to see the new work get used. Do I get rich off of ads? Nah, I support the use of Adblock, not that you'd need it, YouTube has never made a cent off of advertisements. YouN00b has had several generous members who have contributed a sum of $1,327. This has gone to our current server ($330), Internet service for 4 years ($70/month=$3,360), a few of the servers in the past (Including this one with Colin's critical review of my handywork. Sadly, I'm not a corporation that can plop down large dividends for a non-profitable internet venture. My income has always been spoken for in other debts, sadly, otherwise it would go to advertising). But my motives, our accomplishments, the cash flow of the site, and so on mean nothing. I don't want donations, I don't want ads, I just want a community of people that I've known for nearly a decade to be able to have a site that they can call their own. Most of us aged from the "pranksters" site, and probably have jobs and lives well outside the internet. Between the military, college, and jobs, there's not as much time as there used to be. I would like everybody to take a few moments, however, to click the link here: SOPA act. This bill is still very much alive. Please read over what is going on with the American internet. If this bill passes, both Americans, and international users of the Internet will suffer. Since I'm not well rehearsed in lawsuits or have the financial caliber to uphold the website in the event of a lawsuit by such predatory statues, I will be forced to close several, if not all of my domain names and auction them off. YouN00b has always been an IP risk, and we've already had a DMCA takedown request. Without DMCA shielding YN from lawsuits (under Safe Harbor provisions), it would be illogical for me to continue on this path. Please click the link, and sign as many petitions online as you can find. I'm looking very sternly at AE too, with Rombarded (which appears suspended right now). His site would be under very similar scrutiny. |

I read this thread and thought "ach, it can't be THAT big a deal, surely?" and then I happened to click on to Wikipedia and saw their header warning with the link to the page that I linked up there ^. Then when I clicked the link you gave me in return I grasped the magnitude of the situation, and have now shared it with everyone on my facebook (and it's very rare that I post anything to my own facebook!)
