 Overlord Member 'Supreme Ruler' Level 16 Posts: 1,068 Submissions: 19  | Some of you may remember that I purchased a Gameboy Advance system (not SP) for $5 at a garage sale. This in turn caused me to spend obscene amounts of money purchasing Pokemon games (damn, I feel stupid writing that). Anyway, the game looks interesting and I tried to play it on my recent flight to a conference. Trouble is, the screen is kinda scratched and it has no backlight. My old lady eyes are having a really hard time seeing the screen. Not too far from my hotel is a Gamestop. They happen to have the Gameboy Advance SP with backlight for $40 plus $5 for the year long insurance. They have a blue one with minimal screen scratching and they will give me $8 credit for the old GBA POS I have now (remember, I paid $5 for it). I am having them hold it for me for two days. I looked at the Nintendo DS, DSI and the other latest greatest DSx or something (prices from $129 to $190 at Target). It plays old GBA and GBA Color games but I don't really want to spend that kind of money since I already have a PSP I hardly play. I just found out you can get cartridges for the GBA SP you can burn ROMS onto and play. This sounds like a complete win situation for me. I really want your opinion... should I buy the GBA SP for $37? Yes, I know there are emulators but they aren't as easily portable as the GBA SP. Thank you for your help. I count on your tech insight in these matters. |

 commandpromt Member 'N00b' Level 14 Posts: 638 Submissions: 32 | I have an sp with an EZ flash 4 card ( the cart you're refering to that you burn ROMs onto) and I absolutely love it. There are quite a few different kinds of flash carts out there so be sure to do your research first. My personal recommendation is the EZ-flash IV cart. Here is the site I bought it from but it is not currently available. You'll have to search around to find one, and make sure it has GBA support. Keep in mind that flash carts are generally expensive and hard to find, so getting one under that price is very rare. Plus the quality of that cart is very high and the features it has are well worth the price. I believe I paid around $25 for mine around 2 years ago and it lacks some features that I wish I had gotten such as GBC and GB ROM support but I still love it. Hope this helps. EDIT: also, it requires minisd instead of microSD. I simply bought a 2GB microSD card and used a miniSD card adapter that came with my cell phone. |

I want to make sure I'm getting the right thing. I don't want to waste $200 (or any amount of money) on another handheld system that I might not play. I have no problem spending money I just want to make sure it is going to fit my needs. For example, I just stated above that I spent obscene amounts of money on used Pokemon and Zelda Games when I could have just burned ROMS onto a chip. Had I known that I might not have purchased as many games at once. Since you young people are my technology guides, I was asking for your expert opinions whether the SP would suit my needs. I'm sort of lost when it comes to handheld games. I wouldn't even be buying this stuff if it hadn't been for all the Pokemon discussions here and me wanting to see what all the hubbub is about. I digress. Commandpromt and igloo, thank you for your input. It was helpful. I will be researching the card and I purchased the SP just now. I don't want to rip you off or anything its just the micro SD and Super card together cost around $30. Plus metroid II is a classic ;) I always get tracking when I ship stuff too in case you're worried about scams. EDIT: I can keep all my ROMs on the cart too if you want. |
