I have a kitchen with a seven foot wide entry way. I have to keep my dogs in the kitchen because I just had carpet installed in the rest of the house. I have the entry way currently blocked off with a series of boxes (filled with items) and cardboard stretching the length of the entryway. One of my dogs is an escape artist. Doesn't seem to matter what I put up or how tall, he manages to get through to the other side.

I need to make a barrier with a gate. I don't have a lot of tools aside from an 18 volt cordless drill and a dremel so I thought I would use PVC pipe for the frame (I'll buy a PVC pipe cutter) but I need something to cover the frame. I've seen canvass with grommets but I don't know what they're called or where to buy them from.

Anyway, any ideas to solve this problem?

Personally, I'd have gone electric - a cattle fence.

If the kitchen is fairly free of obstacles, a long leash tied to the far end should give them room for movement but prevent carpet stuffing.

PVC and wire? Weave the pvc into a simple barrier where the ends are splayed enough to fit either side of the wall segments of the opening.

That made me laugh. Even tho I threaten to make all RE topics knitting topics, I don't actually know how to knit. That's something old ladies do. I'm not really that old yet.

I hadn't thought about the wire. That's a very good idea, Colin. As for electric... the dog that keeps escaping is the retarded one that chased a car four years ago and caught it (he was run over). He would probably keep running into it because he doesn't learn from his mistakes (he still tries to chase cars). The kitchen isn't free of obstacles... it has a large island and a large table. Just enough stuff for the dog to strangle himself.

How strong is the dog? Try some tarp and just tie it to the frame with rope. You can also try zip ties, if you dont feel like learning some new knots.

Other good materials would be net (Buy a fishing net, cut it up, tie/ziptie it to the frame), bed sheet, spare carpeting, any spare fabric really. Just go dumpster diving.

Me? Go dumpster diving? pfffftt...

Lol, j/k.

Great ideas there especially with the zip ties. smaller tarps, say 4 feet by 4 feet would be ideal if they had grommets every three or four inches. This dog claws, bashes is full weight into his efforts and bites at obstacles.

These are great ideas. Please keep them coming. Perhaps I will string wire and cover it with some type of cloth or tarp. I'd like it aesthetically pleasing if at all possible.

Thin plywood or pegboard. I bought 1/4" thick, 8'x4' section of pegboard recently at Home Depot for $15. Don't need to drill screw holes, fairly inexpensive, easy to break into sections (though ugly when not cut), and I don't see a dog fitting through the hole.

Infra-red beam across the door hooked up to an electronic dog whistle placed in the carpeted area. Oh, but then there's the learning deficient one who would ignore it, sit in the doorway wondering what the sound was and really piss the other dogs off.

If no success dumpster diving, bring home the dumpster; should be big enough.

Move your fridge into the center of the open area and that will give you less space to plug up and also give a large heavy object as an anchor.

Buy cats.
