I was playing this on full volume, because I did not believe that guys warning, and now my computer smells like an electric fire. Anyone know any other good sub killers? I want to break my subwoofer so i finally have a legit reason for my parents to buy me a new computer. Its a Presario c500, with Ubuntu. I can barely play youtube w/o it freezing.

Why would you kill a perfectly good subwoofer to get a new computer? Are your parents slow? I mean, no offense but I wouldn't buy my kid a new computer just because his speaker fried. Besides, it isn't that hard to disconnect the power wire inside the tower case. You know, the one that goes to the motherboard so it won't even turn on. Look around on your motherboard and you should see a bunch of wires clustered to usually an 8 pin line. There should be writing that says power, reset, etc. Pull the one that says power. Then put it back together. Set some of your hair on fire. Put it in the case of the computer (once you put out the fire, of course). Throw a fit and tell a story about how you were playing some game, you heard a "pop", smelled a burning smell and the whole thing shutdown and won't turn back on.

Once you get a new computer, put the old one in a closet for six months til everyone forgets about it and then "mysteriously" resurrect it (perhaps taking it to a geeky friend at school). Then load command line Free BSD and setup an mp3 server. Yeah.

never had any of my electronics blow on me. my printer smells like it is frying silicon or some other plastic-y stuff whenever I use it sometimes but no fires yet.

Yes. Very. The case is not grounded, and routinely shocks me, the hard drive is only 40 gigs, and is failing, it routinely overheats, Vista is looong gone and corrupted, the screen is cracked, the sound sucks, I cannot even play a flash game on here, and they bought this thing for me (without any say from me) from some shady russian guy that did not provide any warranty or support of any kind.

This computer has lived its life, and I just have to convince my parents to let it die.

And that plan is so evil i like it. I have taken apart this thing so many times to clean the heatsink out, I can take it apart with my eyes closed.

Glad you like my evil plan. Ahem... if you are going to kill the computer, might I suggest a video of you wielding a sledgehammer? Or some explosives of some form? Of course, safety is first so nothing dangerous. Member Added Image

Used to be pretty often, but then I realized that it was useless. The performance is not noticeably affected, and, because my cat seems to like warm surfaces and always sleeps on top of the laptop, and cant be stopped short of throwing him outside, it needs to be done a lot.

Well, cleaning it doesn't really inhibit or help performance. The monthly downtime here is caused by me taking the server offline, and cleaning the dust out (never really bad), wiping down the outside, and cleaning/changing air filters (which I've put on to help keep dust out). I also reseat the memory, processor, and any connectors. On a laptop, some of that won't work, but it's a great habit to get into. The last time I did it was the 15th, because the internet dropped out for around 30 minutes, so I figured "why not."

I frequently open up my computer and clean out any dust which has settled anywhere, clean out the dust filters etc. It all helps to extend the life of your machine, keeps everything cool etc. And besides, who wants to have a dusty ass old rig anyway?

I can't imagine a burning smell being a good thing Pyro.

I clean the inside of my Computer sometimes, when I get in that pointless "lets clean everything" mood.

If you haven't cleaned it out in a while, then it's probably very dusty, which might be giving out the burning smell. Try turning on an old dusty lamp, you get the same smell out of it.

Anyway. Sabotage that computer, make it seem like an accident, and get a new one. Then post pics/story, etc.

You see, guys, the problem is that it is incredibly difficult to get this thing open. Just to get to the fan, I have to take off the keyboard, pry up the the power button assembly with a screwdriver, remove it, completely take off the entire screen, disconnect the wireless card, take out about 45 screws, take out both hard drives, the battery, the ram, like 3 inner cases, and disconnect all the cables that lead to the motherboard, essentially taking the main motherboard out of the case altogether, after disassembling everything else.

I'd have made a filter for the air inlet.

Hope you get a new machine!
Give me your parents phone number. I'll talk some sense into them.

Pyro, mix one tablespoon of salt into one cup of hot water. Stir, let cool. Put in a spray bottle, spray in the cooling vents while on, enjoy.

Could cause a fire, etc. But at least it will make it unrepairable.
