This morning I awoke to my alarm clock powered by electricity generated by the public power monopoly and regulated by the U.S. Department of Energy.

I then took a shower in the clean water provided by a municipal water utility.

After that, I turned on the TV to one of the FCC-regulated channels to see what the National Weather Service of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration determined the weather was going to be like, using satellites designed, built, and launched by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

I watched this while eating my breakfast made of U.S. Department of Agriculture-inspected food and taking drugs which have been determined safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

At the appropriate time, as regulated by the U.S. Congress and kept accurate by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the U.S. Naval Observatory, I get into my National Highway Traffic Safety Administration-approved automobile and set out to work on the roads build by the local, state, and federal Departments of Transportation, possibly stopping to purchase additional fuel of a quality determined by the Environmental Protection Agency, using legal tender issued by the Federal Reserve Bank.

On the way out the door I deposit any mail I have to be sent out via the U.S. Postal Service and drop the kids off at the public school.

After spending another day not being maimed or killed at work thanks to the workplace regulations imposed by the Department of Labor and the Occupational Safety and Health administration, enjoying another two meals which again do not kill me because of the USDA, I drive my NHTSA-approved car back home on the DOT-built roads, to my house which has not burned down in my absence because of the state and local building codes and Fire Marshal's inspection, and which has not been plundered of all its valuables thanks to the local police department.

And then I log on to the internet -- which was developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration -- and post on Freerepublic.com and the Fox News forums about how SOCIALISM in medicine is BAD because the government can't do anything right.

Saw this on Digg. It's true though--most people don't know how socialist we truly are. They take it for granted.

ANARCHY FOREVER!!!

All kidding aside, I do appreciate all the things the government does for me, but the fact is, they work for US, and majority rules. So, if the majority chose national health care bill to pass, then awesome. but they didn't. We here have a psuedo democracy. We elect these officials through a corrupt and mismanaged system that allows for many errors to be made. With the technology we have today, theoretically we could have a real democracy, where every single vote counts in everything. but would that be good? What the hell do we know? Fucking poor ass dirt farmers and simpleton workers don't REALLY know what this country needs, do they? Or do they... DO THEY?!?

While that is true, if the people legitimately voted for things, and everybody voted, America would suck more ass than it already dose. At least this is progress.

and majority rules

Things the majority once believed:

Black people shouldn't vote
Women shouldn't vote
Slavery is okay
The Earth is flat
The Earth is the center of the universe
Native Americans are red because they angered God, therefore it is okay to slaughter them

I'd continue, but meh. The fact of the matter is, we live in a representative democracy. The founding fathers were smart enough to know that the majority is full of morons, that's why we don't vote on every bill that comes through like we would in a direct democracy, so we don't have to deal with the tyranny of the majority.

No you didn't, you said indirect democracy was a "corrupt and mismanaged system". I'd suggest if that was directed at me, you take a basic political science course. It's not "pseudo democracy" it's called "having a population too large to hold town hall meetings like it's the god damn 15th century".

I was under the impression that indirect democracy and republic were pretty much synonymous.

We have the technology. We can make it better, faster, stronger than it was before.
Our system is corrupt because the people who run it are corrupt. I say this is a psuedo democracy because the American people do not make the decisions.

It has nothing to do with technology, it has to do with efficiency. When you leave every single diplomatic decision up to the votes of the American people, it brings legislature to a grinding halt because nothing gets done. I don't care how big of a network you can string together, it doesn't change the fact that we live in a country populated by idiots, and that transcends both racial and party lines. Do you honestly believe your neighbor, and your mom, and your high school janitor, and that guy who takes your money at the gas station are all informed enough and kept up to date on the situations at hand to make decisions on budget, social issues, and foreign affairs? You do make the decision, you make it every 2 years when you vote for your Senators, every 6 years when you vote for your House Representatives, and every 4 years when you vote for the President. I really don't think your solutions to energy independence or the withering education budget are shell-shocking enough to constitute polling hundreds of millions of people (not sure how many of the total population are eligible voters) every time a piece of legislature passes through Congress, which, by the way, is rather often.

graboid (i believe) is arguing the EFFECTIVENESS of the current system.
and it's not really an argument more of a statement of a problem. believe me if there was a solution that was clear enough for us to work out it would have been done by meow.

The main problem isn't even with whether or not they know though, though you are right, that is a factor. The problem is that in such a large country, there really isn't a way to poll everyone about everything, saying that there is is underestimating just how many decisions are made about every little part of government every day. People have jobs, they can't be polled every time the city wants to allocate more funds to fix potholes in a local community, or to deny every asinine bill that's ever proposed (one of my lovely state's gubernatorial candidates was the author of a bill proposing to make profanity a felony). It's just too much to impose on people already weighed down by their occupations, which is why we choose people to do it for a living. Then we all only have to vote once every few years. If we did it any other way, obviously most of the decisions would be influenced largely by the unemployed and the retired, which is hardly representative at all.

If I came off as short earlier, it was do to your "herp stupid fucks" statement, which was uncalled for. The fact of that matter is, even though you made statements against the idea of a majority rule, you did make the statement that the US is "majority rules", implied that it was intended to be as such, and then stated that representative democracy was "pseudo-democracy". Regardless of your opinions on these subjects, you stated the above as facts, when they are false, and that is where I derived issue with your post. Not with your opinions, with your presentation of facts.
