Toasty SysOp Level 40 Posts: 7,388 Submissions: 227 | While I see your point DLB, I think that somebody like me, somebody with extremely controversial views, and a big mouth, that indirectly represents the site, is like running a daycare by feeding kids bleach. I've done a ton of work to build this site, and keep the site going. I've abandoned most of my other domains (until recently), and lost touch with things I used to do before I started this project. I tried to make a site that took care of everything that people on RE hated -- bugs, rules, slow page loads, layout, updates, sysop interaction, etc. I find that human nature tells us to be curious, and that one of the reasons that RE is so successful, is in fact, the bugs. People like discovering things, finding ways around things. YN is too simple, there's nothing to learn here, because everything is plain English. The content base here does not attract new members, hence my hoax about Toasty getting hacked. I did in fact drop the database, and post about plans to make this a more tech-savvy site. The truth is, the first post there was Indy saying he wasn't going to be around as much due to the change. That would be asinine for me to do to the one person who 6 months ago bailed this site out. I'm down to pennies (literally), and Project Wonderful declined YN for ads. I have two domains expiring, and my server software has lapsed due to this. The time I'd otherwise be spending fruitlessly applying updates, and trying to keep the site busy, I'm spending to develop my portfolio -- in hopes that will help me provide the site you guys -- and guests -- really want. I've always been open to suggestions on how to improve the site... I've done nearly all of them, but the main improvement we need now will have to come from the members. YN needs people to invite their friends to the site, we need new creative content in the Articles and Urbex areas, Videos and Images is a dying branch of the site. It's an extreme legal risk, costly in terms of storage and bandwidth, and as far as videos goes -- if YouTube deems YouN00b not to be fit to display their videos, and pull their API from us, that would be devastating if YN grew up around it's selection of videos. Hopefully this overtly long pep-talk will encourage you guys to do some tutorials on stuff. I'm not talking "computers only", hell, anything from cooking, to fixing cars, to fixing a bike, to selling a house. Whatever you guys can conjure up will help out a lot. |
