It is no new news that YN has been run at my house by my own servers since it was made.

I've always counted on Linksys/Cisco routers, modems, hubs, and switches for their price, reliability, and robustness. I've used a WRT54G to handle my wireless routing, as well as a part of the gateway for YN's servers to reach the web.

As many of you know, the WRT54G contained Linux software which Linksys didn't release, and this was a violation of the GPL. Linksys was forced to settle out of court for an unknown amount, and to also release their firmware code. This worked great until WRT54G v5 came out, where they changed their firmware to a different type which couldn't be easily flashed by third parties.

Well, for those lucky enough to have an older WRT54G, you too can flash the firmware with several compatible firmwares (such as DD-WRT, Tomato, and OpenWrt). Or, if you have balls of steel and know some C and Linux, you can Download the source code. While all of this is fine and dandy, I hate Linux -- so I'll have to use a third party firmware.

Since I'm not sure if it will "brick" my current router, I opted into buying a new one -- of course, this one is a v4, but is sold under the guise of WRT54GL, the "L", of course; being Linux.

There are plenty of features for the third party firmware, as controlling radio strength, etc.

I'll be doing an article on the transition of normal Linksys Firmware to the new Linux firmware sometime tonight so that others with this can do it too.

I have the exact same router, my uncle put it to tomato, boosted the signal strength so I get full bars in my room.

It's great really and makes port forwarding a breeze.

Yea, I'm looking online now at dd-wrt, and it seems like there's too many variables involved. I.E. they don't know what they're doing, or it's all about trial and error.

So I'll start looking at Tomato and go from there.
