I'm not sure if this will work on other makes and models except what I will mention below, but you can always try the same methods listed below, and it may work.

The following information is for Pontiac, namely the Grand Am (99-05) and Grand Prix (97-04)

1) Make sure vehicle is running
2) Push on the E-brake until the "Brake" light illuminates on the dash. Do this slowly, and stop pressing down (on the pedal) or pulling (on the handle if so equipped) once the light on the dash comes on. Doing so trips the sensor into thinking the E-brake is engaged, but the brake itself is not.
