On today's forums and other user content-based sites, most require that you provide an E-Mail address upon sign-up. After you provide an E-Mail, you are generally required to visit the E-Mail and click on a "validation link" before you can post.

The reasons are sometimes obscure, but generally understandable:
- Spam prevention. Most people have only a handful of E-Mail addresses at most, so this limits the amount of accounts they can create when spamming, and allows removal of content by E-Mail rather quickly.
- Password Recovery. It's only human to forget, and because of this, sites often can E-Mail a reminder, or a new password.
- Updates and information. Many sites support E-Mail notification when a new message is in your inbox, new topics are made, or wh...

Interesting read. I always use hidemyass' anonymous and disposable email accounts if i think i might be spammed or something.
