A Crazy Cracker Production.

Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any damage to yourself, vehicle, objects from getting pissed off and throwing tools, shitting yourself, or wanting to punch clowns in the kidneys until they pee blood. Make sure that you know what you are doing before you take this type of job on. Read all directions on products mentioned. Do not go emo with the razor.
Please note that these instructions are for an aluminum or steel valve cover. This guide only covers vehicles that use gasket sealer / maker, not vehicles with pre made gaskets that you would buy in a store. Do not attempt with plastic. Makes and models vary. See in store display for details.

Items that you will need:

-Appropriate bit / socket to remove valve cover bolts
-Razor
-Rubber Mallet
-Ratchet
-Paint Thinner
-Brake Clean or Contact Cleaner
-Flat Head Screwdriver
-Gasket Sealer / Maker

First things first

1). Remove your spark plug wires. Make sure to mark them so you don't get them mixed up during putting everything back together, or you'll have more problems trying to get the damn car started.

2). Get your appropriate torx / socket and start undoing the bolts. I personally start from the inner bolts and work my way out to the outer ones, but you can loosen as you feel necessary.

While you are at it, put all of your bolts in one place, out of the way of the motor.

3) Disconnect PCV Valve, accessories, etc from the valve cover.

4) Start to try and loosen the cover with the rubber mallet. Take your time and DO NOT use a steel hammer. You'll wreck the cover. It will take some effort; the seal around the cover will take some time to break free. If needed, slip the razor blade between the head and the cover to cut through the old gasket material. After a lot of swearing, and beating / cutting, and removal of the cover, you should see something like this;

Make sure not to put ANY tools near the motor where they can fall in. Also, make sure no debris or foreign objects get anywhere near here; you'll be fucked if they fall in.

5) Now it's time to start removal of the old gasket material. This will be the most time consuming part of the job. You'll want to make sure that you get the mating surface of both the head and the valve cover gasket as clean as possible; this will ensure a good seal when you go to run your bead of new gasket. Use the razor on an angle (like shown in pic below), and go around the mating surface. I personally switched back and forth between the razor and a flat head screwdriver (held on same angle as razor) to get as much of the old gasket off as possible.

Yes, definitely be careful with the razor. If it feels like you are hitting something other than the old gasket material, stop immediately. That picture isn't the best quality to show the angle that I had it on, but the razor should pretty much run almost parallel to the surface being cleaned / prepped.

I agree to a certain extent. However, it's not that big a deal when you're using RTV sealant. The RTV fills all the voids. I have actually roughed the surface of newly machined parts to get RTV to stick to it better.
