Finding your way home Mapless Navigation Ever get caught in the middle of nowhere? No map, GPS, and don't feel like stopping for directions? Make yourself look like a badass navigator with these tips on direction. Because I'm in the United States, chances are some of these tips won't apply to you. Some of these techniques aren't too reliable either, so it's a good idea to combine them as much as you can to be sure you're going where you want to. Planetary and Time Navigation Because our world isn't planning on changing rotation any time soon, this is a pretty reliable system. The times given relate to a typical summer sunrise, sunset schedule, you should adjust the times accordingly if it is late fall, winter, or early spring. 2:00AM - 4:00AM Moon sets to your West. 4:00AM - 10:00AM Sun rises to your East. 10:00AM - 3:00PM Planetary navigation unreliable. 3:00PM - 8:00PM Sun sets in the West. 8:00PM - 11:00PM Moon rises in the East. 11:00PM - 2:00AM Planetary navigation unreliable. Navigating the Grid Thankfully, there aren't structures without addresses, nor streets without names (if it doesn't have a name, or an address, you're seeing a mirage. Get something to drink.) It would help knowing if the road you're on is an East-West road, or a North-South road. You can get some accuracy if you don't know. but instead of 15 degree accuracy, you're facing 120 degree accuracy. Look at the nearest address. If it is odd on your right, you're either going North or East. If it is odd to your left, you're going either South or West. Obviously, if you only see an even address, simply pretend that there's an odd one on the other side of the road. Navigation by Traffic If you're in a suburban to urban area, and you know where the nearest town/city is (the most populated), you can tell whether you're heading near or away from it by watching traffic. You'll be looking for the heavier flow (or even traffic jams). If it is earlier in the day (6-9AM), then chances are everybody is heading to work, and you know they're heading towards the town. Later (3-7PM), chances are they're heading away from this town. Road Signs Probably the most obvious of them all, is using road signs to get around. But most of them have more clues than you think.
