Changing Differential Fluid
BaboonAss

Changing your differential fluid on a regular basis will prolong the death of your rear-end (or on a Dodge, it's a good way to see how bad it's fucked up), and will allow you to get a "preview" of the health of the gears and bearings in a rear end.

The typical shadetree job costs about $30.00/USD, the cost includes the gear oil (~$7.00), Anti-Slip additive where needed (~$7.00) and the gasket (Unless you make your own).

The cost of replacing the inner workings of a rear end ranges from ~$1,000 to $2,500, depending on how bad it is).

First, remove all of the bolts. You will want a drain pan handy in the event that the fluid begins leaking early:

CAREFULLY pry the cover off, be ready to catch it otherwise it will fall in the pan of oil and make a mess.

Clean the inside of the cover out, and scrape away the gasket material (or, because I'm lazy, I ground the shit off):
